Tritons Win Behind Sayers' 19 Kills

LA JOLLA, Calif. -  The UC San Diego men's volleyball team earned its first win of the season with a 27-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-23 victory over Princeton on Wednesday night in RIMAC Arena.  Chris Sayers proved too much for the Tigers as he sent down a match-high 19 kills and hit at a .400 clip.  Jon Daze added 12 kills and the Tritons outblocked Princeton 15.0-9.0.  The win improves the Tritons to 1-7, while the Tigers drop to 0-3.  Joe Sexton had 11 digs while Brooks Dierdorff ran the offense with 50 assists and UCSD outhit Princeton .237-.168.

Game one was tied several times until UCSD pulled ahead 16-12 on a Brenden Bowe kill.  Princeton would come right back and tie it at 17-17 and take the lead 23-18 on a kill.  UCSD would climb back within two points at 27-25 and 29-27, but Princeton won the game on a Michael Vincent kill, 30-27.

In game two, UCSD opened up a 10-4 lead on a John Mark Wendler and Russ Hardy block.  UCSD's lead would be cut down to two points at 16-14 after a service error.  UCSD went on a small run to lead 26-20 on back-to-back Sayers kills.  The lead would be enough as UCSD won 30-27 on a Princeton service error.

UCSD played its best game of the year statistically in game three, as UCSD hit at a .406 clip and holding the Tigers to a .156 percent.  Leading 9-7, UCSD put several runs together.  UCSD led 21-13 after a Princeton attack error.  After the Tigers cut the lead down to 25-20, UCSD scored the next four points, the last coming on a triple block by Wendler, Dierdorff and Hardy.  UCSD won game three 30-21.

Princeton would not go away easy in game four, as the Tigers led 10-8.  Trailing 11-10, UCSD scored five straight capped by a Sayers ace to lead 15-11.  Princeton would get no closer than 18-15 as UCSD responded with five consecutive points to lead 20-15.  From there, UCSD cruised to the game four win 30-23.
