LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's volleyball team earned its first win of the season with a 27-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-23 victory over Princeton on Wednesday night in RIMAC Arena. Chris Sayers proved too much for the Tigers as he sent down a match-high 19 kills and hit at a .400 clip. Jon Daze added 12 kills and the Tritons outblocked Princeton 15.0-9.0. The win improves the Tritons to 1-7, while the Tigers drop to 0-3. Joe Sexton had 11 digs while Brooks Dierdorff ran the offense with 50 assists and UCSD outhit Princeton .237-.168.
Game one was tied several times until UCSD pulled ahead 16-12 on a Brenden Bowe kill. Princeton would come right back and tie it at 17-17 and take the lead 23-18 on a kill. UCSD would climb back within two points at 27-25 and 29-27, but Princeton won the game on a Michael Vincent kill, 30-27.
In game two, UCSD opened up a 10-4 lead on a John Mark Wendler and Russ Hardy block. UCSD's lead would be cut down to two points at 16-14 after a service error. UCSD went on a small run to lead 26-20 on back-to-back Sayers kills. The lead would be enough as UCSD won 30-27 on a Princeton service error.
UCSD played its best game of the year statistically in game three, as UCSD hit at a .406 clip and holding the Tigers to a .156 percent. Leading 9-7, UCSD put several runs together. UCSD led 21-13 after a Princeton attack error. After the Tigers cut the lead down to 25-20, UCSD scored the next four points, the last coming on a triple block by Wendler, Dierdorff and Hardy. UCSD won game three 30-21.
Princeton would not go away easy in game four, as the Tigers led 10-8. Trailing 11-10, UCSD scored five straight capped by a Sayers ace to lead 15-11. Princeton would get no closer than 18-15 as UCSD responded with five consecutive points to lead 20-15. From there, UCSD cruised to the game four win 30-23.
UCSD is back in action on Thursday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
