Tritons Fall to Cal Poly Pomona by 1-0 Score in Double OT on Friday Night

POMONA, Calif. ? It was worth the wait for Cal Poly Pomona's men's soccer team. The Broncos got a game-winning goal from Armando Galvan with 4:43 left in the second overtime to give Cal Poly Pomona a 1-0 win over UC San Diego Friday night at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (7-5-2, 5-4-2) posted its second straight win this week and won for the third time in the past four games.

The Broncos pulled into fourth-place in a tightly-bunched California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division with 17 points, just one point behind second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. UC San Diego (6-6-2, 4-5-2) slipped back to fifth place in the division with 14 points.

Galvan was able to head in a free kick by Ben Van der Fluit in the second overtime period. It was the first shot in the overtime sessions as both teams clamped down on defense.

Galvan, who leads the Broncos with five goals, scored his third goal of the week. He had two goals in a 3-2 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday in San Bernardino.

Thomas Ryan made two saves for the Broncos to record his second shutout of the season. Luis Salazar had four saves in a solid effort for the Tritons.

It was the second double overtime game played by the two South Division rivals. The first meeting resulted in a 1-1 tie in La Jolla on Sept. 10.

The Broncos had the better of it in the first half and had a 4-1 edge in shots. Cal Poly Pomona also controlled play in the opening stages of the second half before the Tritons began making some dangerous runs. The Tritons had a 6-3 edge in shots, their best chance coming when an onrushing Patrick Kelly blasted a shot over the crossbar.

Both teams had three corner kicks.

Tadd Dolfo had three shots to lead the Broncos, while Matt Horne had three attempts for the Tritons.

UCSD continues its road trip with a 3 p.m. match at Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday afternoon.
