CARSON, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team gave up a goal in the 27th minute of the first half and could not get the equalizer as 23rd-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills got a measure of revenge with its 1-0 victory on Wednesday evening in Carson, Calif. The win for the Toros avenges a 1-0, double overtime loss to the Tritons on September 12 in La Jolla.
With the loss the Tritons fall out of the fourth spot in the CCAA standings, falling to 6-5-2 overall and 4-4-2 in league action while CSUDH improves to 9-5-0 overall and 5-5-0 in CCAA play.
The Toros got the game-winner from Jesse Graham as the San Diego native took a Kyle Holland pass and beat UCSD netminder Luis Salazar for his third goal of the season. From that point on the Tritons kept things close but could not get the equalize past Kyle Polak to force overtime.
UCSD took nine shots in the match, half as many as the Toros. Two of the Tritons' shots were on goal, compared to four for CSUDH. The corner kicks were just about even as the Toros took three on the night, compared to only two for UCSD.
The loss forces UCSD into a fifth place tie in the league standings with Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona. The Tritons have 14 points in league play, one behind the Toros and Cal State Stanislaus for the fourth and final spot in the CCAA Tournament.
Head coach Derek Armstrong and his squad continues its three-match road trip at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Tritons will also play Cal State San Bernardino on the road this weekend, playing the Coyotes at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
