LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women's soccer team scored first but could not hold on as Humboldt State scored late to force a 1-1 draw in front of 919 fans on Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field. With the tie, UCSD's record goes to 9-1-2 overall and 6-1-2 in league play while the Lumberjacks see their record go to 6-4-3 overall and 3-3-3 in league action.
Junior Kathy Sepulveda got the Tritons on the board first, taking a beautiful crossing pass from senior Kelly Cochran and beating HSU netminder Staci Self in the 56th minute. The goal was Sepulveda's fourth of the year.
After nearly scoring a couple of more times, UCSD's defense was caught a little off guard in the 86th minute as Jessica Hewins netted a goal on a corner kick to tie the score up at one apiece. Hewins picked up her third goal of the season, sending in a high, bending ball from the corner that curved right into the back right side of the goal.
The goal was one of only two shots on goal that Humboldt State took on the day as Triton goalkeeper Jessica McGovern stopped the other shot, which came earlier in the second half, for her only save of the match.
Despite out-shooting the ?Jacks by a 22-6 margin, including a 16-4 marginUCSD could not find the back of the net for the game-winner. The Tritons also held a big advantage in corner kicks, 7-2, while Humboldt State committed 14 fouls to only 10 for the UCSD.
UCSD returns to action next week with three road matches, beginning on Wednesday evening in Carson, Calif. The Tritons will square off with CCAA South Division rivals Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m. before traveling to play at Cal Poly Pomona and at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and Sunday afternoons, respectively.
