LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego swimming and diving teams dropped a dual meet against UC Irvine in its final tune-up before the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships in February. The UCSD men's team lost 179.5-118.5 as the Tritons' Daniel Gordh qualified for the NCAA Championships in the diving events. The Triton women lost 198-101, however Susan Bell raced to a school-record time in the 50 back.
On the Tritons women's side, Sophie Levy continued her strong distance times with a first-place finish in the 1000 free (10:18.06) and a runner-up finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.59. Emily Harlan won the 100 free (53.28) and finished second in the 50 free (24.35). Senior Louisa Salisbury finished second in the 100 breast. Bell finished runner-up in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.03. Bell's 200 medley relay split of 27.35 set a new school record. UCSD ended the meet on a winning note as the 200 free relay team of Aubrey Panis, Shannon Simonds, Levy and Harlan raced to a time of 1:37.92.
The UCSD men's team was led by diver Daniel Gordh who won both diving events and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Joel Tourtellotte won the 1000 free with a time of 9:45.60. Lars Nordstrom won the 100 free at 46.74 and finished second in the 50 free with a 21.45 time. Jesse Marin won the 100 fly with a time of 52.32. Several Tritons finished second in events as Evan Hsaio took second in the 100 breast (59.23) and Michael Baier finished second in the 500 free (4:42.61).
The UC San Diego swimming and diving teams are back in action for the PCSC Championships on Feb. 8-11 in Long Beach, Calif.
