LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego women's basketball team led by 12 points at halftime and used a 12-2 run to start the second half en route to a convincing 68-36 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. With the win the Tritons improve to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in CCAA play while the Broncos fall to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in league action.
Junior Leora Juster once again led the UCSD offensive attack, scoring 25 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the floor. She also made 5-of-6 free throws. Freshman Michelle Osier added 14 points, six rebounds and three steals while sophomore Briana Hinga chipped in with five points, a team-high 11 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
Despite a horrendous first half shooting display in which the Tritons made only 10-of-32 shots, UCSD held a 29-17 advantage at intermission. The Tritons made 14-of-27 shots in the second stanza to lift their percentage up to .407 for the game, outscoring the Broncos by a 39-19 margin, en route to the 32-point victory.
Cal Poly Pomona, conversely, struggled all night long, making only 13-of-58 shots on the night for a 22.4% mark from the floor. The Broncos made only 1-of-12 shots from beyond the 3-point arc while converting only half of their 18 foul shot attempts.
Ally Smith led the CPP offense with 10 points while Khiara Ferguson pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Lauren Kitaguchi was responsible for 10 of the Broncos' 27 turnovers in the game.
The win for UCSD was its eighth in a row, the longest such streak in program history since the 1998-99 squad captured 11 in a row. The longest win streak in UCSD women's basketball history was accomplished by the 1997-98 team that won 16-straight, a streak that started on January 2 and ran through March 4.
The victory also moves the Tritons back into a tie atop the CCAA standings with Cal State Bakersfield and Chico State. CSUB defeated Cal State L.A. and Cal State Monterey Bay this week while the Wildcats beat San Francisco State and Sonoma State.
UCSD returns to action next week, traveling to the Bay Area for two games on the road. Head coach Janell Jones and her squad will play at Sonoma State on Friday night and at San Francisco State on Saturday evening. Both games are slated for 5:30 p.m. starts and will mark the conclusion of the first half of the league season.
