No. 15 UCSD Races Past Roadrunners 4-1

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 15th-ranked UC San Diego men's soccer team cruised past Cal State Bakersfield by a 4-1 score Saturday night at Triton Soccer Field. With the win the Tritons improve to 4-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Roadrunners fall to 2-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in league action.

Senior Matt Davey got the Tritons on the board quickly, netting his fourth goal of the year at the 4:40 mark, taking a Dustin Tannenhaus centering pass and sliding it under CSUB netminder Marc Perez for a 1-0 lead.

Just under five minutes later the Tritons added to their lead as senior Grant Nishio took his own rebound and nudged the ball past Perez for a 2-0 advantage. The goal came at the 9:27 mark and was Nishio's third tally of the season.

UCSD kept the pressure on the Roadunners in the first half, out-shooting them by a 9-1 margin. Davey was able to make his second shot of the game find the back of the net, slotting a penalty re-start ball into the upper right corner from about 20 yards out.

The Tritons' third goal came at the 26:47 mark and was quickly answered by CSUB who got on the board at the 28:04 mark off a penalty kick from Matt O'Sullivan. That goal ended the first half scoring as the team's entered intermission with the score in UCSD's favor at 3-1.

Following the break, the Tritons picked up right where they left off, peppering the CSUB netminder with shots. Senior Jon Krupansky netted his first goal of the season at the 47:27 mark, taking a centering pass from Davey and sliding it home from 10 yards out.

For the match, UCSD out-shot the Roadrunners by a 15-3 margin. The three shots taken by CSUB was its lowest total since head coach Simon Tobin took over the program 18 years ago.

UCSD returns to action on Wednesday, September 21, traveling to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m. in Carson, Calif. Following that match the Tritons return home for a 4:30 p.m. match on Saturday, September 24 against Cal Poly Pomona.
