UCSD Cuises Past Arizona Venom, Wins Exhibition Game 94-71 in RIMAC

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego women's basketball team won its second and final exhibition game of the 2005-06 season, defeating the Arizona Venom, an AAU team, by a 94-51 score on Sunday afternoon in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons will begin the regular season on Wednesday night, hosting Alaska Fairbanks at 5:30 p.m.

 

Junior Hillary Hansen led the way for UCSD, scoring a team-high 18 points to go along with her eight assists and four steals. Briana Hinga added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Leora Juster also scored 13 points while grabbing six boards and dishing out five assists.

 

Michelle Osier and Meaghan Noud rounded out the Triton scorers in double digits, adding 11 and 10 points, respectively. Both pulled down six rebounds apiece.

 

UCSD dominated the game from beginning to end, jumping out to a 24-10 halfway through the first half before entering intermission with a 43-31 lead. The Tritons went on an 18-4 run to begin the second half, taking a 26 point lead at 61-35 with 12:52 remaining. The Venom could get no closer than a 19 point deficit as UCSD pulled away for the easy win in the final tuneup game.

 

Glory Johnson led the way for the Venom with her 17 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Heather Wyatt added 16 points while Traci Dobbins chipped in with 13.

 

Following Wednesday's season opener at home with the Nanooks, head coach Janell Jones will take her team to Irvine for the Concordia University tournament. The Tritons will play South Dakota on Friday, November 25 before taking on the host the following evening.
