SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's tennis had four players complete day one of the Santa Clara University Bronco Classic on Friday in Santa Clara. Blake Meister, Brent Molden, Steven Oechel and Erik Oijala all competed on day one against Division I opponents. The group of four all competed in singles and doubles events in what will be the first of three straight days of action for the Tritons.
Blake Meister and Brent Molden teamed up for a big win over Eric McKean and Blake Muller of Stanford to begin the tournament, defeating the duo from The Farm by an 8-5 score. The Tritons' pair advanced and later played in the quarterfinals of the Blue Doubles bracket but fell by an 8-4 score to Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen of Santa Clara.
In singles action, Mesiter had a tremendous first day, defeating Torin Ching of USF by scores of 6-1 and 6-3. He returned later in the day for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong of the host Broncos. The wins move Meister into one of four quarterfinal matches in the White Singles bracket on Saturday.
Molden won his first round Blue Singles bracket match against Falko Huttenberger of USF by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 but fell in the round of 16 to Stanford's Muller by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
Oechel and Oijala lost their first round Red Doubles bracket match to Brian Brogan and Joakim Rydberg of Sacramento State by an 8-3 margin. Both Oechel and Oijala dropped their first singles matches and will play next in the consolation bracket on Saturday. Oechel dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision in the White Singles bracket to Henri Landes of UC Davis while Oijala fell 6-4, 6-4 to Yury Platonov of Saint Mary's College.
Following Saturday and Sunday's action in the Bay Area, UCSD will return to the court on October 13-16 at the ITA National Championships in Fort Myers, Fla. The duo of Molden and Eric Rubens qualified for the doubles competition by winning the ITA West Regional last weekend in Pomona.
