In non-conference men's basketball action at UCSD's RIMAC Arena Saturday afternoon, Humboldt State showed why it is currently ranked number one in the country, defeating the host Tritons by the final score of 100-58.
It was all Jacks after UCSD took a 2-0 lead on a made basket by sophomore center Jordan Watkins, culminating in a 19-0 run which made the score 33-11 in favor of Humboldt State with just under nine minutes to go in the first half. The half eventually ended with the Jacks holding a 58-35 advantage.
For the game, Humboldt State junior forward Fred Hooks, out of Horizon High School in San Diego, finished with 16 points and a game-high 21 rebounds. Ryan Wilber, a sophomore guard, scored a game-high 21 points off the bench, converting on seven three-pointers and seven-of-eight free throws. Juniors Austin Nichols (15) and Kaylin Thornton (12) also reached double figures in scoring. Senior Jeremy Robinson, another Horizon product, provided a game-high seven assists to go with five points and four steals.
Watkins and junior Sean Crawford each contributed 11 points for the Tritons with juniors Cameron Jackson and Ryan Rikansrud producing 10 points apiece. Crawford also had team-highs of five rebounds and four assists before leaving late in the game with an apparent ankle injury. UCSD was outrebounded 48-34 by the Jacks on the afternoon.
Humboldt State, which took the top spot in the first National Association of Basketball Coaches/Division II Bulletin Top 25 Poll of the season on December 17, improved to a perfect 8-0 with the win. UCSD drops to 2-5 in its non-conference finale.
The Tritons will resume California Collegiate Athletic Association play next Friday, hosting Cal State Stanislaus. Tip-off at RIMAC Arena is slated for 7:30 PM, and will follow the women's game which begins at 5:30
