• NCAA D-III national champion in 200 freestyle (1984)
• NCAA D-III national champion in 500 freestyle (1984)
• NCAA D-III national champion in 100 backstroke (1985)
• NCAA D-III national champion in 1650 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 400 medley relay (1986)
• NCAA D-III national champion in 200 individual medley (1987)
• Never finished lower than fourth in any National Championship event
• Swimming & diving team placed third at the NCAA D-III Championship in each of his four seasons
• Four-time swimming & diving All-American
• Four-time UCSD Athlete of the Year
• At one point, held 10 UCSD individual records and three relay records
• Held four NCAA records in swimming & diving (200/500 freestyles in 1984; 100 backstroke in 1986 and 200 IM in 1987)
• Three-year swimming & diving team captain
• Made cut for U.S. Olympic Trials (1984)
• Two-time water polo D-I Honorable Mention All-American (1984, 1985; first for UCSD)
• Two-year water polo team captain (1983, 1984)
