Mas Shibata Named Women's Volleyball Top Assistant

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Mas Shibata, the video coordinator and volunteer assistant coach at Stanford during the 2009 season, has been named the top assistant coach with the UC San Diego women's volleyball program, head coach Ricci Luyties announced on Tuesday.

"I am very happy to get an assistant with the experience and qualities that Mas brings to our program," said Luyties. "Mas is an excellent teacher of volleyball techniques and can help each of our players improve their game. I'm confident that his dedication and commitment to the team will keep us moving forward to where we want to be."

Shibata also served as the video coordinator at Stanford in 2007, helping lead the team to its second straight Pac-10 title and an appearance in the NCAA Championship match. In his two years in Palo Alto, the Cardinal went a combined 55-11, including a 30-6 record in conference action.

Shibata began his coaching career at Pacific in 1990 and spent 12 seasons with the Tiger program, eight as a full-time assistant coach. The Tigers achieved a 207-53 mark during Shibata's eight seasons in Stockton. Pacific won three Big West titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during each campaign, reaching the National Semifinals in 1999.

During the 2004 season Shibata was an assistant coach at the University of Oregon. He has also worked with the San Diego Volleyball Club since January.

Shibata obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in real estate and finance from Fresno State in 1977.
