Changing Landscape: Bill Carr Named Deputy AD, Basketball

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Former UC San Diego basketball coach Bill Carr has been elevated to the role of Deputy Athletic Director for Basketball where he will oversee all aspects of the Triton men's and women's basketball programs, including day-to-day operations, roster management, and community engagement. The move was announced by UC San Diego Director of Athletics Andy Fee on Thursday.

"At UC San Diego, we've been thinking differently about how to build our basketball programs," Fee explained. "UC San Diego is one of the most innovative environments in the world – in the lab, in the classroom, and now on the court. The franchise model is a direct reflection of that culture."

Carr returned to UC San Diego in 2024 as the basketball programs' first general manager. Previously, he served an 8-year stint as head women's basketball coach at Santa Clara University, compiling 119 wins and coaching 15 all-league players.  His 2023-24 Broncos posted a 25-9 overall record and finished as regular season runners-up in the West Coast Conference.

Carr is in his second stint in America's Finest City after serving as the head men's basketball coach at Point Loma Nazarene (2011-16), associate head men's coach at the University of San Diego (2007-11) and the head coach of the Tritons (2004-07).

"I'm grateful to Andy for his trust and for the opportunity to continue building something special at UC San Diego," Carr explained. "I've always believed great programs are about great people working together. We have two outstanding head coaches, great staffs, talented scholar-athletes and a university that isn't afraid to think differently. I'm excited about where Triton Basketball is headed and what we have in front of us."

UC San Diego is in its final season competing in The Big West and will transition to the West Coast Conference next summer.

"We can't just show up and hope to be competitive; we need to build the infrastructure now," Fee added. "The franchise model professionalizes the personnel function, creates accountability around roster decisions, and frees our staffs to do what they're great at: coaching their teams. Heidi VanDerveer and Clint Allard are two of the best head coaches in the business, and we are here to support them as they build championship-caliber programs that showcase the Tritons and our amazing campus."
