Tritons Record Historic Finishes at Big West Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. — UC San Diego wrapped up competition at the Big West Championships with both programs reaching historic milestones as the men finished fifth overall for a program-best finish and the women earned a program-best fourth-place finish. The Tritons totaled 13 podium performances and four school records at Jack Rose Track.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego was led by a standout performance from Sylvana Northrop, who earned a pair of podium finishes on the track. Northrop placed second in the 1500m before capturing the conference title in the 5000m with a school-record performance.

The Tritons added multiple runner-up finishes throughout the final day of competition. Allyson Abandonato took second in the 800m, while Tamara Aimufia secured second in the triple jump and broke the school record in the event. On the men's side, Zach Lewis earned silver in the discus while setting a new school record, and Kyle Wood placed third in the javelin.

UC San Diego also closed the championships with strong performances in the relay events as both the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams finished second overall. The men's relay squad also set a new school record.

The Tritons will next compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West First Round on May 27-30 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where the top 48 athletes in each event from the west region will compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships.
