Fresno State is hosting the 14-team tournament at San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno.
The Tritons shot four over par in the opening 18 and turned things around in the second 18, firing three under to move atop the pack at one over par after 36 holes.
Nevada is three strokes behind in second while Pacific is third at seven over.
McDowell sits atop the leader board at five under par. He opened with a two under 69 and improved by a stroke with a three under 68 in round two. He heads into Tuesday's final round with a three stroke advantage over Sacramento State's Zach Mate and Jacob Vazquez of CSUN.
Nathan Tseng is the second Triton in the top 20, sitting in 14th at one over.
