Four-Game Win Streak Halted by No. 4 Stanford

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The No. 13 UC San Diego men's water polo team had its four-game win streak halted Sunday as it lost to No. 4 Stanford by a score of 15-4 at Canyonview Aquatic Center.

The Tritons fell to 7-4 overall while the Cardinal remained unbeaten at 5-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stanford scored the first two goals of the game and never relinquished its lead. The Cardinal led 5-2 after the opening quarter, 8-2 at halftime, and 13-2 following the third frame. The Tritons were held scoreless in both the second and fourth quarters.

Four different players accounted for the home team's goals including Lucas Romaguera, Ante Buzov, Luca Rago, and Lachlin Rossi. Felipe Ferreira, Christian Hammonds, and Mark Laurlund each registered an assist. Center Bennett Axline drew four exclusions while Buzov and Brendon Fezzey each logged three steals. In goal, Alex Hegeman made eight saves and made a steal.

UC San Diego struggled in man-up situations, scoring just one goal over 12 power play opportunities.

For the Cardinal, Max Zelikov netted six goals. Nine different players found the back of the net for Stanford. West Temkin finished with 11 saves in net.

Stanford held a slim 27-24 advantage in shots and scored in five of nine extra man situations.

• Ante Buzov and Lucas Romaguera both have four-game scoring streaks with multiple goals in two of those. 
• It was the fourth time this season that Alex Hegeman has finished with a career-high eight saves.

UP NEXT
UC San Diego has a busy week coming up. It begins with a single game at Concordia Thursday followed by three days at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Invitational in Los Angeles (schedule TBD). The following week includes the Battle of the Kings against LMU on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. It will be the first home game with the students back on campus.
