Tritons Dominate in Win at Concordia

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The No. 13/14 UC San Diego men's water polo team rolled to a 15-3 victory on the road at No. 20 Concordia Thursday afternoon.

The Tritons are now 8-4 overall and the Golden Eagles are 7-6.

Ten different UC San Diego players scored in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons got everything they needed in the opening half of play, scoring five goals in the first quarter and another four in the second to lead 9-1 at the break. They outscored the Eagles 6-2 in the second half. Overall, UC San Diego held Concordia to single goals in each of the second, third, and fourth periods.

Bennett Axline and Lucas Romaguera each found the back of the net three times for the Tritons. Eamon Hennessey pocketed a pair of goals and seven other Tritons had single scores. Playing in his first game of the season, Landon Akerstrom scored a goal and dished out two assists. Brendon Fezzey (one goal, two assists) and Felipe Ferreira (one goal, two assists) also contributed three points apiece in the victory.

In net for UC San Diego, Alex Hegeman mad a career-high 14 saves.

Concordia's Kaliq Khan logged a goal and an assist. Canyon Johnson and Hugo Wouters also scored for the Eagles. Pablo de Souza made nine stops in goal.

TRITON TIDBITS
• Alex Hegeman's previous high for saves was eight, which he totaled four times this season.
• In his season debut, Landon Akerstrom contributed a steal and a sprint win to go along with his goal and two assists.
• It was Eamon Hennessey's seventh multiple-goal performance of 2025. He scored twice in all seven.
• Ante Buzov extended his scoring streak to five games with a goal in the opening quarter.
• The Tritons led 9-0 before the Eagles scored their first goal with one second remaining in the first half.
• UC San Diego held a slim 29-28 advantage in shots.
• It was Concordia's first home game of the season.

UP NEXT
UC San Diego spends the next three days in Los Angeles to compete at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Invitational. The Tritons open play against No. 9/11 Princeton on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The game will be played at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on the campus of USC. Follow the game live with live video and live stats. 

UC San Diego's schedule for the remainder of the tournament will depend on results.

Next week features the annual Battle of the Kings on Wednesday, September 24 at 6 pm. Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla will be rocking as the Tritons take on LMU during the first week that all UC San Diego students are back on campus.
