NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -Â Ten different Tritons scored as the ninth-ranked UC San Diego Women's Water Polo Team defeated No. 22 CSUN, 19-12, Saturday on the road.
The Big West victory moved the Tritons to 14-12 overall and 3-2 in the conference. CSUN dropped to 16-11 and 1-6 in Big West match-ups.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego scored the game's first four goals and never relinquished its lead.
Trailing 7-4 early in the second quarter, back-to-back CSUN goals by Helena Sandhagen brought the Matadors within one at 7-6. However, the Tritons responded by netting five straight goals to go up 12-6. The first came from
Courtney Okumura at 4:30 of the second.
Abigail Schechter,
Caroline Christl,
Sofia Munatones, and
Sydney Munatones followed, the
Sydney Munatones strike coming at 7:26 of the third.
Sofia Munatones assisted on four goals to end her game with five points.
CSUN would come no closer than four goals the rest of the way.
Schechter scored again with 5:09 remaining in the fourth period to put the Tritons ahead 18-10, the team's largest lead of the game.
Kendall Thomas led UC San Diego with four goals. Christl and Okumura each recorded hat tricks, while
Emily Cloherty joined Schechter with a pair of goals.
Lexi Stahl made seven saves and grabbed a steal as the Tritons' goalie.
For CSUN, Sandhagen scored four times and Dorottya Telek tallied three.
UC San Diego scored four power play goals in eight opportunities. The Tritons held a slim 29-27 advantage in shots but held a .655 shooting percentage to the Matadors' .444.
