SAN JOSE, Calif. – UC San Diego softball opened the Silicon Valley Classic with two losses after falling to UIC, 0-2, and then to San Jose State, 0-7 on Friday night in San Jose, Calif.
The Tritons drop to 1-5 and the Flames improve to 3-3 along with the Spartans getting their first win of the season to move to 1-5.
UIC 2, UC SAN DIEGO 0
India Caldwell and the Triton defense held the Flames to three hits and no runs with three putouts. The starting righthander tossed five innings before she was relieved by
Lauren Rozell who gave up two runs on three walks and a defensive error.
Claire Adams relieved Rozell to get out of the jam and get the final two outs.
At the plate, the Tritons were held to three hits with
Lily Hermosillo is on a three-game hit streak after going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Elise Nishimura and
Alexa DeMarse each tallied a hit as well.
UC San Diego threatened in the first three innings with
Morgan Eng stealing a base in the first and third inning to get into scoring position. In the second,
Chloe Lesko was able to earn a walk and advanced to second on
Alexa DeMarse's single.
A sac fly allowed a Spartan run to come in and a Triton error caused another run to come across. The Tritons fell in order in the top of the seventh with the final score at 2-0.
SAN JOSE STATE 7, UC SAN DIEGO 0
Callie Christian earned her first start in the circle and gave up one four runs on three hits with two walks.
Claire Adams came on in as relief and gave up one run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts over four innings of work.
India Caldwell returned for an inning allowing two runs on one hit with one walk and on putout.
Tallying four hits,
Alexis Jimenez,
Lily Hermosillo,
Alexa DeMarse, and
Chloe Lesko each earned a hit against the Spartans. In her collegiate debut, Jimenez went 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter. Nine Tritons struck out to San Jose State's pitcher who went all seven innings.
In the top of the fourth, the Tritons had their best chance to score when
Alexa DeMarse was able to reach third. DeMarse singled and then advanced to second on a throwing error. Two outs were put on the board when
Marissa Hassis reached on a throwing error to put runners at first and second.
Elise Nishimura battled at the plate to earn a walk and advance the runners. The inning turned over with all three stranded on the basepaths.
The Spartans struck in the first with four runs, in the fourth with one run, and in the sixth with two more runs for the final score of 7-0.
