LA JOLLA, Calif. -Â
Caroline Christl's fifth goal of the game lifted the 14th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team a 16-15 sudden victory triumph against No. 7 Arizona State Friday.
The game was the first for both squads at UC San Diego's annual Triton Invitational. The 16-team event continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla.
Sofia Munatones also netted five goals while dishing out two assists to finish with seven points.Â
Courtney Okumura came away with six points on a pair of goals and four helpers, while
Kendall Thomas had four points off two goals and two assists. Freshman
Holly Roberts contributed three assists.
Lucia Doak grabbed four steals and
Bria Zwaschka made eight saves in net en route to the win.
For the Sun Devils, Millie Quin posted six points on a hat trick and three assists. Itziar Almeda and Molly Glad both had five points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tied 12-12 at the end of regulation, UC San Diego won the first overtime period 3-1 to go up 15-13. In the second three-minute overtime period, Glad scored consecutive goals, the second coming with just three seconds on the clock to make it 15-15.
Christl's game-winner came 46 seconds into the sudden victory period.
The Tritons out-scored the Sun Devils 7-5 in the first half and led 9-7 after three quarters of play. Arizona State won the fourth quarter, 5-3, to tie it up and send the contest to overtime.

• The last time UC San Diego had defeated Arizona State was Jan. 25, 2014 (12-11).
