Haynes Named Big West Player of the Week

Triton grad student is the second in program history to earn the honor

IRVINE, Calif. – Following a standout weekend which included a Top 25 victory, UC San Diego grad student Julia Haynes was named Big West Player of the Week Wednesday afternoon by the conference's ten head coaches.

Playing her first spring matches as a Triton, Haynes made a statement on the team's opening weekend, winning a pair of singles matches. Playing at No. 1, Haynes knocked off 24th-ranked Emilija Tverijonaite of Arizona State in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 – UC San Diego's first-ever win over a top 25 opponent since the Tritons moved to Division I. Haynes won again on Sunday in the top spot, downing GCU's Karina Hofbauer in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).

Competing in the top doubles position, Haynes teamed with senior Naomi Nguyen to earn a win over GCU's Hofbauer and Dania Deaifi, 6-4, on Sunday morning. Ranked No. 77 in singles by the ITA, Haynes is the Tritons' first-ever Division I ranked player.

UC San Diego begins a stretch of seven consecutive matches at home this weekend, starting with Calgary (exhibition) on Friday and Idaho on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for a 10 a.m. first serve.
