Women’s Volleyball Adds Asvolinsque to Coaching Staff

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego women's volleyball head coach Melanie Greene has announced the addition of Rafael Asvolinsque as Assistant Coach for the 2024 season.

"It is an honor to welcome Rafael Campos Asvolinsque the Triton Family," said Greene. "His knowledge and experience will be invaluable to our team as he has worked with the U.S. Beach National Team, collegiate and club programs. Rafi has developed strong recruiting ties in California, nationally and internationally. His high character and the ability to connect with players, while also instilling a culture of discipline and accountability, will help serve us as we set out to develop a championship culture. I look forward to working with him!"

Asvolinsque comes to the Tritons after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Point Loma Nazarene. During his tenure at PLNU, Asvolinsque helped the Sea Lions to the program's first PacWest Championship in 2023.

In 2021, he served as volunteer assistant at the University of San Diego. Locally, he has also served as a head coach for Coast Volleyball Club for the past four years (2020-2024).

On the beach, Asvolinsque has served as a volunteer coach and scrimmage athlete for several Olympic pairings. Most recently, he worked with Tokyo Olympic champions April Ross and Alix Klineman in 2020-21.

A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Asvolinsque began playing volleyball at 11 years old as both an indoor and beach athlete. He has played alongside some of Brazil's top-rated players, including Olympic Medalists and World Champions.

He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration and management at Rio de Janeiro's Pontifical Catholic University and certificate degree in sports coaching from San Diego University for Integrative Studies (SDUIS).
