LA JOLLA, Calif. – A quartet of Tritons earned accolades Tuesday for their hard work both in the classroom and on the court. Juniors
Kelly Leung,
Naomi Nguyen, and
Katelyn Vu – and sophomore
Grace Gamal – were all named to the Academic All-District Team as announced by College Sports Communicators. All four will now move on to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot.
Grace Gamal (Villa Park, Calif.) holds a 3.88 grade point average as a neurobiology major. Playing primarily at the No. 2 position, Gamal led the team in singles victories this season (seven).
Kelly Leung (Hong Kong, China) is a business economics major with a 3.76 grade point average. The second year Triton primarily played No. 1 and 2 singles and was the only UC San Diego scholar-athlete to compete in singles every match this season.
Naomi Nguyen (Goodyear, Ariz.) maintains a 3.5 grade point average as a global health major. Nguyen paired with grad student
Sophie Pearson to pace UC San Diego in doubles victories with 11. She is the program's all-time leader in doubles wins at the Division I level (31).
Katelyn Vu (Chino Hills, Calif.) is a cognitive science – machine learning major and holds a 3.64 cumulative GPA. Vu holds the program record for singles wins with 21 and singles wins in a season (12 in 2023).
The Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Tennis Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes tennis honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA — for each gender.
To be eligible, student-athletes must hold a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and must have at least a sophomore standing. In addition, they must have competed in at least 70% of the team's matches during the spring.
Academically, the women's tennis program posted the
highest team grade point average in the Athletics Department during winter quarter – the fourth consecutive quarter in which the women's tennis team had the highest GPA in the department.
