LA JOLLA, Calif. -Â The
Bandon Dunes Championship men's golf tournament on the Oregon Coast has been canceled in its entirety due to inclement weather.
Sunday's opening round of the 16-team, 54-hole tournament on the Pacific Dunes Course was canceled because of weather and the event was pared down to 36-holes.
Monday, the field got through eight to 12 holes before play was suspended. Temperatures were in the upper 40's with south winds 25-35 miles per hour gusting to 55 mph. A high wind warning was put in place at 1 p.m. and will remain in effect until 11 p.m.
The competition committee made the decision to cancel the remainder of the event as it didn't think the players could get in a fair first round in order to complete a 36-hole event.
Playing for UC San Diego in the team event were
Davis McDowell,
Nathan Tseng,
Justin Gill,
Francis Catalano, and
Davis Lee. In addition,
Akira Isayama was on course as an individual.
The tournament was hosted by the University of Idaho in Bandon, Ore.
Up next, the Tritons hold their fourth annual UC San Diego Invitational March 24-26 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif. A total of 18 teams will converge on the North Course for the second-consecutive season. It will be the first time the event will be contested over three days of play.
In 2023, Oklahoma Christian finished 32-under par to win. CSUN's Eirik Thomassen was the individual medalist at 20-under par.
The 2021 and 2022 UC San Diego Invitationals were held at La Costa in Carlsbad, Calif.
