Tritons Win on the Road

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After a month hiatus from competition, UC San Diego swim returned to action against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon at the Roadrunners' aquatic center.  
 
The Triton women defeated Cal State Bakersfield 181-99 and the Triton men defeated the Roadrunners 169-124.
 
ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE
Opening the meet with a couple of wins, two Triton relay squads won both heats in the 200 yard medley relay. The A squad won the relay by 0.55 seconds after Chloe Braun swam a 26.36 breaststroke leg and Mackenzie Lee swam a 19.99 freestyle leg to edge out their hosts. Earning the first individual win on the women's side was Sophia Bell in the 1000 free. Bell swam a 10:21.55 time to take first a full 5.39 seconds before the next swimmer. Mia Park joined Bell in the top three with a third-place finish with a time of 10:45.99.
 
Audrey Moore kept the streak going with a first-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.69, edging her competition out with a quick third split of 28.39. Sydney Niles finished third in the same event with a time of 1:55.76. The Tritons took second through fifth in the 100 back with Maddie O'Connell and Teagan Monroe taking second and third.
 
In the 100 breaststroke, Chloe Braun and Hayley Gregory took first and second with times of 1:02.20 and 1:04.55 respectively. Edana Huang finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.39 and was joined by Kelsey Leung in third with a time of 2:08.65. Lee took her second win of the day in the 50 free with a time of 24.34 and was joined by Jasmine Phuong in second who posted a time of 24.65.
 
Moore tallied her second win in the 100 free with a time of 53.09 and Bianca Fernandez finished third with a time of 53.78. In the 200 back, Eva Boehlke took another win with a time of 2:03.40. Minh-Nha Kawamura, Iris Bayan, and Danielle Greenwood joined Boehlke in third, fourth, and fifth. Braun led the way again in the 200 breast with a time of 1:47.94 to shatter the program record. Gregory finished second with a time of 2:17.69. Posting a time of 5:02.96, Bell won the 500 free with Niles joining in third with a time of 5:09.40.
 
Leading the way in the 100 fly, O'Connell won the event with a time of 56.62 and was joined by Huang in second with a time of 57.02. In the 200 IM, Boehlke finished first posting a time of 2:08.21. Brooke Shumway joined Boehlke in second and Leung finished third followed by Gabi Icheva in fourth.
 
The women finished the day with their final win in the 400 free relay. The team of Moore, Fernandez, O'Connell, and Sydney Borick combined for a time of 3:32.12.
 
ON THE MEN'S SIDE
Beginning the day in Bakersfield with a victory, the 200 medley relay team was able to take the first event by more than two seconds with a time of 1:33.43.  The A squad won the relay by 0.55 seconds after Bekzhan Yessengeldy swam a 26.36 breaststroke leg and Hunter Cehelnik swam a 19.99 freestyle leg to edge out their hosts. Winning the first individual event on the men's side, Devin Esser led the Tritons to a top three sweep in the 1000 free with a time of 9:37.99. He was joined by Charlie Franz and Jackson Bernstein.
 
Combining for second thru fifth, Cehelnik led the way with a time of 1:40.85. He was followed by Ryan Kirton, Luigi Franco, and Aidan Rikic. In the 100 back, Jack O'Shaughnessy swam a time of 49.63 to win the event and moves into the top 10 all-time list. Robby Griswold joined the freshman taking third in the event with a time of 51.34. Yessengeldy took another victory in the 100 breast with a time of 57.29 and was joined by Colton Milne in second. Chad Morrison was the lone Triton in 200 fly and he took second with a time of 1:51.71. Lucas Brunett posted a 21.04 in the 50 free to win the event. Zach Elian had a third-place finish in the same event with a time of 21.35.
 
Kirton and Elian took third and second in the 100 free posting a time of 46.33 and 46.69, respectively. Earning his first win of the meet, Griswold took the 200 back with a time of 1:49.45. Franco, O'Shaughnessy, and Nathan Lee joined Griswold taking second, third, and fourth. In the 200 breast, Yessengeldy took his third win of the day with a time of 2:07.91. Milne and Jake Reuter took second and third in the same event.
 
Taking on another distance swim, Esser won his second event in the 500 free with a time of 4:35.80. Franz joined the senior again with a third-place finish, posting a time of 4:42.52. Cehelnik and Morrison earned more points for the Tritons after taking second and fourth in the 100 fly. The duo was joined by Jacob Cairns who finished fifth. Lee posted a time of 1:53.72 in the 200 IM to win the event. Reuter finished in the top three with Lee, taking third with a time of 1:56.99.
 
UP NEXT
The Tritons will return to action in the new year on Saturday, Jan. 4 as they host UCLA and Wisconsin on the La Jolla campus. The meet is set to begin 11 a.m. and is free and open to the public.
