LA JOLLA, Calif. – Two UC San Diego men's tennis players earned accolades Tuesday morning for their hard work both in the classroom and on the court. Sophomore
Joseph Teh and Senior
Daniel Traxler were named to the Academic All-District Team as announced by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA). The duo will now move on to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot.
A Computer Science major out of UC San Diego's Roosevelt College, Teh holds a 3.87 cumulative GPA. He has primarily played doubles this season and won three matches at the No. 3 spot with partner
Diogo Tinoco. The duo took victories over teams from Navy, San Diego State, and Villanova. Teh also earned a win in singles action, topping an opponent from seventh-ranked Harvard at the No. 6 position.
Traxler owns a 3.67 cumulative GPA as a Communications major from Marshall College. He was recently named Second Team All-Big West in singles and Honorable Mention All-Big West in doubles. Traxler more than tripled his win total from a year ago. He led UC San Diego in the No. 1 singles spot 19 times while filling the No. 2 position on three occasions. Traxler picked up victories against opponents from Nevada, Villanova, Navy, Portland State, and San Diego State, as well as Big West opponents UC Davis and UC Riverside. Three of those wins came in straight sets.
A new award in 2023, the Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Tennis Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes tennis honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA — for each gender.
To be eligible, student-athletes must hold a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and must have completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution. In addition, they must have competed in at least 50% of the team's matches this spring.
UC San Diego
recently accepted an invitation to compete in the first Universal Tennis College NIT Championship to be conducted next week in Metro Atlanta. Tournament draws are expected to be announced soon.
CSC Academic All-America® selections will be announced on May 31.
