LA JOLLA, Calif. – Entering the second week of Big West conference play the Tritons will host Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Oct. 4 before traveling to Cal Poly on Sunday, Oct. 8 for an afternoon match in San Luis Obispo.

Cal State Fullerton (8-2-2) currently leads the conference after a 2-0 start against CSUN and UC Davis. On the road at Northridge, the Titans netted five goals to stay ahead of the Matadors who put away four of their own last Wednesday night. It was a different game at Davis on Saturday, the Titans were out shot 7-18 by the Aggies with a 2-4 on-goal differential. Cal State Fullerton was able to stay on top with a lone penalty kick in the 24th minute. In their last meeting with the Tritons, CSF won in a 1-0 result. This will be the third time the teams are meeting and the all-time vs. record is currently tied at 1-1.

Dropping the conference opener to UC Davis (1-0) followed by a tie with UC Riverside (1-1), Cal Poly (2-5-2) enters this week at 0-1-1 in the Big West. Before meeting the Tritons on Sunday, the Mustangs will host CSUN on Wednesday night. It was a shoot-out the last time the two teams met in La Jolla when the Tritons edged the Mustangs in 4-3 decision after a second-half rally fell short by the visitors. Since joining the Big West, the all-time vs. record sits at 1-1 with both teams looking to go ahead.

LAST TIME OUT
In the opening week of Big West play, the Tritons went 1-0-1 against UC Santa Barbara and Sacramento State. UC San Diego defeated the conference favorite Gauchos at home in a 3-0 result on Wednesday, Sep. 27 followed by hard fought 0-0 draw on the road at Sac State.

WILSON EARNS BIG WEST HONORS
Following the opening week of Big West, goalkeeperÂ
Mitchell Wilson earns Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors after a career week in between the pipes.

Opening conference play vs. conference favorite, UC Santa Barbara, at home and Sacramento State on the road, Wilson played a total of 180 minutes facing 28 shots to record 12 saves and two clean sheets. Against the Gauchos, the senior guided the defense to a shutout performance after facing 13 shots and making three critical saves to allow the Tritons to win 3-0.

Traveling to Sac State on Saturday, he held the line at 0-0 against the Hornets as he made a career-high nine saves against a total of 15 shots. The nine saves are the second highest saves in Big West play and the third highest for a single game so far this season.

The Hunting Beach product is third in the conference for saves per game at 4.14/game, and has gotten the Tritons off to the best conference start in the Division I era. This is the fourth time UC San Diego has earned conference weekly honors from the Big West and Wilson is the third Triton to earn the honors joiningÂ

About UC San Diego Athletics
