SAN DIEGO, Calif. – With the 2022-23 season approaching,
The Guardian reviewed the best XI North American players in the European leagues, and UC San Diego's former goalie, Josh Cohen, made the list.
Â
Cohen graduated from UC San Diego in 2014 with a degree in Bioengineering. During his time in the gold and blue, he earned numerous honors such as NSCAA All-America First Team, Daktronics All-America honorable mention, NSCAA All-West Region First Team, and was named the CCAA Most Valuable Defensive Player his senior year. At the end of his junior year, Cohen led the entire NCAA Division II in individual goals-against average (0.397) and save percentage (.898). He participated in the Triton Athletes' Council as the team representative during his junior and senior years.
Â
In his professional career, Cohen has competed with five different clubs. While playing with the Sacramento Republic, he was named a finalist for the USL Goalkeeper of the Year and was selected to the USL All-League Second Team. In 2019 he transferred to the Israeli Premier League to play for Maccabi Haifa FC in advance of their 2019-20 season. After a delayed season due to COVID-19, Cohen was named the Israeli Premier League's Player of the Season in 2020-21 and led Maccabi Haifa to their first league championship since their last one in 2010-11. Maccabi Haifa and Cohen wrapped up another winning season in 2021-22 with a 24-6-6 record, only giving up 27 goals to the 79 they made.
Â
The club and Cohen will compete next against Olympiakos this Wednesday, July 27.
