FULLERTON, Calif. – On April 16, in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, UC San Diego dropped the final two games and the series to Cal State Fullerton.
The Tritons move to 20-20 overall and 8-7 in the Big West, dropping into fifth. The Titans advance to 27-15 overall and 12-3 in the Big West, tied in first with Long Beach State.
In game one,
Jada Cecil got the start for the Tritons, allowing no runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Kaia Simpson came in as relief for Cecil in the eighth, allowing one run on three hits with no strikeouts and one walk. The Tritons were led by right fielder
Deena Pederson who went 3-for-3 at the plate. A total of 10 UC San Diego runners were left on base.
Kaia Simpson got the start for UC San Diego, pitching the bottom of the first and allowing five runs on one hit with one strikeout and two walks.
Gabby Williams relieved Simpson in the second and allowed no runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Shelby Thompson relieved Williams in the sixth and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. The Tritons were led by the second baseman
Isabel Lavrov who went 1-for-2 at the plate. UC San Diego left four runners on base in the finale.
GAME TWO: CAL STATE FULLERTON 1, UC SAN DIEGO 0 (8 INN.)
With
Jada Cecil in the circle for the Tritons, Cal State Fullerton was kept off-balance through seven innings. The Titans' pitcher caused the same problem for the Tritons as both teams remained scoreless into extra innings.
The Tritons threatened throughout the eight innings with aggressive baserunning from
Deena Pederson who stole three on the Titans and
Morgan Eng who stole one.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Titans sent a line drive down the left field line for the walk off.
GAME THREE: CAL STATE FULLERTON 6, UC SAN DIEGO 0
In the bottom of the first, the Titans hung five runs on the board. They extended their lead with another RBI in the sixth to 6-0.
On two hits from
Keila Bosinger and
Isabel Lavrov, the Tritons were unable to plate runners and were struck out nine times.
TRITON TIDBITS
- In game two of the series, Deena Pederson went 3-for-3 at the plate, a season high performance for the sophomore outfielder.
- Game 3 was the third lowest hitting performance for UC San Diego this season.
- In the Big West, Cal State Fullerton sits in first at 12-3 with Long Beach State. After today's losses, the Tritons drop to fifth place, one game ahead of UC Riverside.
- The Tritons move to 3-5 in their all-time vs. record with Cal State Fullerton.
