Tritons Battle Tough Conditions and Opposition at Beach Opener

LONG BEACH, Calif — The UC San Diego track and field team competed among a field of high-caliber opposition, and the whole field battled the weather at the Beach Opener Friday and Saturday. Wind was a factor both days, with rainclouds marauding around Long Beach on day two.

Naomi Chin was a silver lining among all the clouds for the Tritons, as she achieved the fifth-best pole vault mark in school history, clearing 12' 0.75" to finish third in the event.

All-Time Performances:
  • Naomi Chin — Pole Vault (12' 0.75"/third overall/fifth all-time)
Top Finishers: MEN:
Top Finishers: QUOTABLE
"It was great to have the team together at one of the biggest meets we have seen since Covid," Co-Head Coach Tony Salerno said. "We performed well, but the cool and windy conditions were not great for producing big performances outside of Naomi Chin in the pole vault."

TRITON TIDBITS
  • On the men's side, Brad Nelson (3000 Steeplechase) and the 400 Relay team of Erpelding, McCray, Lee, Crespo, and Asiedu-Akrofi both collected second-place finishes, albeit among fields of only three competitors
  • While the Beach Opener is not a Big West Conference meet, many Big West teams attended, with Long Beach State, Hawaii, Cal State Bakersfield, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine all joining UC San Diego

The Tritons are back home next weekend, hosting the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on March 11 at Triton Track & Field Stadium. It is the first of two meets UC San Diego will host this season, along with the Triton Invitational, which will take place April 8-9.
