LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Tritons will compete in five games this weekend vs. Yale, Brigham Young University, Boston University, Utah State, and Cal. UC San Diego joins the annual San Diego Classic for the first time, co-hosting with San Diego State and the University of San Diego. The Classic begins Friday, March 4 and runs till Sunday, March 6.

THE MATCHUPS
Due to a winter storm in Texas, the Yale Bulldogs' season opener was cancelled. They are 0-0 coming into the San Diego Classic. Yale was projected to finish fifth in the Ivy League Preseason Poll and are returning two seniors and one junior. The Bulldogs roster features nine freshmen and five sophomores.

Brigham Young University enters the San Diego Classic at 9-4. BYU topped Stanford, Hawaii, San Jose State, and run ruled Cal State Bakerfield twice. At the Mary Nutter Classic, the Cougars fell to No. 17 Tennessee, but took a win over Bethune Cookman. Huntyr Ava has batted in 16 runs over 13 games and has a .400 batting avg. with a .838 slugging percentage. From in the circle, Chloe Temples has tossed 28 strikeouts over three games with a 1.59 ERA on the season.

The San Diego Classic is the fourth classic for Boston University in the 2022 season. They are entering 5-8 with wins over Purdue, Akron, and Saint Francis. At the Red & Black Showcase, the Terriers split with then No. 13 Georgia. Leading the Terriers from the plate, Kayla Roncin has recorded 15 hits and 10 runs with a .375 batting avg. Allison Boaz has a 2.18 ERA and is 2-3 on the season with 16 strikeouts on the season.

Utah State is 6-7 heading into the San Diego Classic. The Aggies recently beat Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, and Cal Poly. With 44 at bats, Gabriella Jimenez has recorded 18 hits and 15 RBIs. She leads USU with a .409 batting avg. Lexi Orozco has recorded 10 runs, 15 hits, and 15 RBIs on the season with a .405 batting avg. In the circle, Kapri Toone is 3-1 on the season with 3.94 ERA.

Entering the San Diego Classic at 12-3, the Cal Bears are on a six-game winning streak. They have run ruled five teams in five innings on their way to 12 wins. Makena Smith has been to the plate 42 times with a .548 batting avg. to record 23 hits, 18 RBIs, 15 runs, and six homeruns. Haylei Archer leads Cal from the circle with a 1.54 ERA. She has recorded 27 strikeouts over 27 innings pitched and is 4-1 on the season. Another Bear's pitcher, Sona Halajian is 7-0 from the circle with 35 strikeouts recorded.

REAL HONORED AS TRITON ATHLETE OF THE WEEK | FEB. 28
Over five games at the Mary Nutter Classic,Â
Sophia Real hit .600 (9-for-15), recorded 10 total bases and an average .647 on base percentage. Real led the Nutter Classic in batting average and on base percentage out of all 27 teams and tied third for most hits. Her slugging percentage for the weekend was .667 with one RBI brought in.
CECIL HONORED AS TRITON ATHLETE OF THE WEEK | FEB. 14
On her career opening weekend with the Tritons,Â
Jada Cecil was the primary pitcher against the Nevada Wolf Pack and the LMU Lions, she even pitched an inning against #3 UCLA. In the Nevada game, Cecil faced 16 batters and struck 12 of them out. She allowed no runs to be scored in her five innings on the mound and kept the Wolf Pack swinging with three flyouts. Against the Lions, Cecil pitched all seven innings, recording four more strikeouts, 12 flyouts, and 5 groundouts. The Lions were only able to squeeze two runs out of Cecil. As she led from the circle, the Tritons defense was able to force LMU to leave nine runners on base over the course of the game. In her inning against the Bruins, Cecil faced three batters. She recorded no hits, no runs, one strikeout, and two flyouts. She is now 2-0 in her collegiate pitching career.
