Small Squad Puts Up Big Performance at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO — Despite bringing only around half of the squad, UC San Diego's track and field team set five new top-ten marks in program history at the Ross & Sharon Irwin Invitational, hosted by Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday. Freshman sprinter Idara Ibekwe was responsible for two of those results, and junior Katie Cuneo posted perhaps the most spectacular among them: the third-longest javelin throw by any Triton ever. Graduate student Zeinab Torabi and senior Zach Aanstoots both picked up event wins.

QUOTABLE
"This was the perfect meet to have at the tail end of finals — great conditions and good competition," Co-Head Coach Tony Salerno said. "To have this many people move up on the all-time list when we had only about half the team competing suggests big things are on the horizon."

TRITON TIDBITS
  • Kalobe Jimenez and Idara Ibekwe are no strangers to the Tritons' all-time record list, but both added their names to new categories on Saturday with their performances in the 200- and 100-meter Dash respectively
  • Katie Cuneo's javelin throw of 148' 4" is a whopping 8' 3" further than her previous best
  • Because Saturday's meet took place right at the end of winter quarter finals, a smaller-than-normal contingent of Tritons traveled to the meet, with the team's distance runners being among the notable absences

UP NEXT
The Tritons remain in San Diego for their next meet, heading across town to San Diego State for the Aztec Invitational, March 25-26.
