IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 11 UC San Diego women's water polo team dropped its first two games at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational Friday at UC Irvine's Anteater Aquatics Complex, falling to No. 1 UCLA 15-7 before coming up short against No. 10 UC Davis in an 11-8 loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Against UCLA, the Tritons fell behind early and were unable to recover despite a late surge. UCLA began the match with seven unanswered goals, a barrage that was cut off by a goal from
Annika Arroyo with 5:13 remaining in the second period.
UCLA came right back though, unleashing another six unanswered goals before
Lucia Doak put in a shot on the power play to bring the score to 13-2. UC San Diego would come into its own in the fourth period though, outscoring UCLA 4-1 in that span, with two goals from
Lauren Bellavia.
In their second match of the day, the Tritons kept the score close with fellow Big West team UC Davis throughout. UC San Diego scored its first three goals of the match on the power play, with Arroyo opening the scoring again for the Tritons. After heading out of halftime down 6-5,
Courtney Okumura knotted the score at 6-6, and
Taylor Onstott responded five minutes later with another game-tying goal, bringing the score to 7-7.
UC Davis would not be denied though, scoring a buzzer beater to end the third period and netting three more goals in the fourth as part of a run of. 4-0 run to bring the score to 11-7.
Ciara Franke scored her third goal of the match with just under two minutes remaining, cutting the deficit to 11-8, but the damage had already been done.
QUOTABLE
"A couple losses like these are to be expected throughout the whole year," said UC San Diego head coach
Brad Kreutzkamp. "We battle with a lot of teams, especially in our conference, and they can go either way any night. We're in a good head space and we know that this is a long marathon, not a sprint."
