Tritons Edged by Indiana on Day Two of Kalbus Invitational

Set to Face Big West Opponent UC Santa Barbara Sunday

CORONA DEL MAR, Calif. – The No. 11 UC San Diego women's water polo team dropped its lone match of the day at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational Saturday at Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center at Corona del Mar High School, falling to No. 17 Indiana 10-9.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons were nearly able to pull off the come from behind victory in this one, but Indiana staved off a late push to earn the upset. UC San Diego went down 4-2 at the end of the first period, with Ciara Franke netting both tallies. After a tight defensive second period, the Tritons came out of halftime trailing 6-3 and quickly surrendered a goal, extending the deficit to 7-3 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third period.
 
UC San Diego proceeded to score five unanswered goals, with four coming in the third period. The fifth goal of that run, from Franke, gave the Tritons their first lead of the match. Up 8-7 with 7:32 remaining in the contest, UC San Diego went back and forth with Indiana, taking its last lead on a powerplay goal from Holly Maine with 4:45 remaining. The Hoosiers would respond with their own score 30 seconds later before putting away the game-winning shot with just under two minutes to play.   
 
QUOTABLE
"A few things went wrong against us today and Indiana was able to take advantage," said UC San Diego head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. "[We'll] be looking for more consistency tomorrow across all four quarters."

  • Goal Streak Grows – Ciara Franke has now recorded at least one goal in all 11 matches she has competed in this season, totaling 28 goals. Franke recorded three goals, leading the team, in the loss to Indiana on Saturday.
  • Records Watch – Bennett Bugelli recorded five more saves across two matches on the first day of the Kalbus Invitational, bringing her career total up to 695 career saves, good for fifth all time. This season, she has already leapt up from ninth place after making 25 saves at the UCSB Winter Invite. Next on the list is Maryam Hadiashar with 697 saves.
