LA JOLLA, Calif. — It's life on the road this week for the 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team as the Tritons head out of town for four matches over Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
UC San Diego carries a 6-9 overall record with a perfect 3-0 mark in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA).
The action begins Thursday night with a WWPA game at No. 16 California Baptist. The Tritons will be looking to stay undefeated in league action and the Lancers come in at 12-7 overall and 2-1 in the WWPA.
The next three games will be non-conference affairs for UC San Diego.
Both of Friday's contests will be part of The Joust tournament, hosted by California Baptist. The two matches will be played at the Splash! Aquatics Center in La Mirada.
In the first tilt, UC San Diego takes on Westcliff, an NAIA program out of Irvine, Calif. It will be just the second-ever clash between the Tritons and Warriors. The first came in September of 2021 during the Triton Invitational with UC San Diego winning, 22-6. Westcliff currently holds a winning record at 13-11.Â
Friday's second match will be the inaugural meeting between UC San Diego and Austin College, an NCAA Division III squad from Sherman, Texas. Playing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) East Division, the Kangaroos were picked to win the league this year in the preseason coaches poll. The 'Roos are 4-5 overall.
Saturday, the Tritons roll up to Los Angeles to face UCLA, the third-ranked team in the country. The Bruins have accumulated a 15-1 record thus far. Their lone loss was by a single goal, 8-7, at then-No. 3 Stanford on Sept. 25.

WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.
