LA JOLLA, Calif. – Clarissa Reynoso and
Robyn Wampler of UC San Diego softball earned the program's first-ever Big West Conference weekly accolades on Monday afternoon. Reynoso was named Field Player of the Week as Wampler garnered Pitcher of the Week for their impressive efforts against Grand Canyon on Sunday. The duo helped guide the Tritons to their first Division I win – a 6-5 back-and-forth 11-inning thriller that concluded in walk-off fashion. UC San Diego split the series 1-1 with the Antelopes.
It is the second week of honors awarded for the 2021 season from the Big West.
CLARISSA REYNOSO | Junior | San Dimas, Calif.
Reynoso batted a remarkable .600 (3-for-5) on the day. In the bottom of the 11th of game one, her pinch-hit single jump started the Tritons' rally which ultimately delivered the game winning run.
In game two, Reynoso earned the start behind the plate and continued her clutch performance in the box. She exploded with two home runs -- one solo shot in the fourth and a two-RBI blast in the sixth, both to the deepest part of the park. Overall, the San Dimas native tallied a total of nine bases on the weekend, recording a slugging percentage of 1.800 and an on-base percentage of .600. She was responsible for three of UC San Diego's four runs in the second game.
The award is not only UC San Diego's first Field Player of the Week honor, but Reynoso's first conference accolade in her career.
ROBYN WAMPLER | Senior | Berkeley, Calif.
Wampler went 1-0 in the circle on Sunday, throwing all 11 innings in game one of the doubleheader. The Berkeley native blanked the Antelopes through the initial four innings of play, surrendering just one hit. She compiled an ERA of 1.27 in the complete game, allowing just two earned runs on five hits and walked only one. In 43 batters faced, the senior lefty limited the Antelopes to a .175 batting average. She retired Grand Canyon in order in five of the 11 innings tossed, including three consecutive outs in the top half of the final inning.
Although it is Wampler's first Big West recognition, she is well-versed in conference weekly awards after being named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week a total of nine times in her career.
The Tritons will be off next weekend but return home when they host Utah State on Sat. Mar. 6 in a non-conference doubleheader. Games are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
