Alumni in Action: A Conversation with Kari Lyman '03

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego Athletics is sharing the perspectives of alumni scholar-athletes whose work in healthcare has been impacted by COVID-19. Today’s featured alumnus is Kari Lyman ‘03 of the women’s water polo team.

Q: What is your job and where are you currently working?

Lyman: I currently am an Emergency Room nurse in Santa Barbara, CA.  I am lucky enough to work at Cottage Hospital.  We are a level 1 trauma center and a stroke center.  Santa Barbara is not a huge city, but it’s a tight knit one.  We have been through a mass shooting, mudslides, and we will get through this virus too. I have been there for 10 years this fall. I like to say I am an Expert Generalist working in the ER!

Q: How is COVID-19 impacting the work that you do and your life outside of work?

Lyman: Being in the ER, it is always changing. We are used to the unexpected. There has been a lot of constant change, even for us. It’s a novel virus and requires some novel change and creativity. I feel lucky to be one of the people to still be working through all of this. Cottage has done a great job of making sure we are well staffed and prepared for any surges. Outside of work I usually spend time working out, surfing, hiking and riding my hors. I am usually really busy on my days off. All that activity helps me maintain homeostasis with a sometimes pretty stressful job. With the stay at home order I have been a bit stir crazy like I am sure many other people have been! My husband and I have done quite a few home workouts. Luckily, where I live is small and more rural and hiking trails have been opening with moderation. Also, my horse helps me stay sane through it all!

Q: What did you learn from being a scholar-athlete that you've been able to apply to your profession?

Lyman: I was just realizing as I wrote the answer above, how many times I refer to ‘we’ or ‘us’ in reference to the ER.  There is a lot to be learned being on a team. I spent all my school years on a swim or water polo team and I’m so grateful. I think it helps in so many aspects of ‘adult’ life! For example, working with different personalities, yet when things get rough, everyone works together. It is magical when it’s cohesive and flows. It’s just like a waterpolo game, when you know what your teammate is thinking. You can feel it when it all comes together. Team dynamics, working under stress, thinking through things under stress, it all comes to play in my job same as it did  playing polo. You feel like you are apart of something that is greater than yourself. It’s rewarding, and fun! You also end up with some of your best life long friends. I don’t live in San Diego, or as close to my polo girlfriends as I would like, but it always feels like home when I do get to see them.

Q: What suggestions, advice, or words of encouragement do you have for our current scholar-athletes during these trying times?

Lyman: Keep playing, stay active, be kind and love each other. Just like a long swim set or a long shift, they all end. Hang in there.
