Q: What did you learn from being a scholar-athlete that you've been able to apply to your profession?
Lyman: I was just realizing as I wrote the answer above, how many times I refer to ‘we’ or ‘us’ in reference to the ER. There is a lot to be learned being on a team. I spent all my school years on a swim or water polo team and I’m so grateful. I think it helps in so many aspects of ‘adult’ life! For example, working with different personalities, yet when things get rough, everyone works together. It is magical when it’s cohesive and flows. It’s just like a waterpolo game, when you know what your teammate is thinking. You can feel it when it all comes together. Team dynamics, working under stress, thinking through things under stress, it all comes to play in my job same as it did playing polo. You feel like you are apart of something that is greater than yourself. It’s rewarding, and fun! You also end up with some of your best life long friends. I don’t live in San Diego, or as close to my polo girlfriends as I would like, but it always feels like home when I do get to see them.
Q: What suggestions, advice, or words of encouragement do you have for our current scholar-athletes during these trying times?
Lyman: Keep playing, stay active, be kind and love each other. Just like a long swim set or a long shift, they all end. Hang in there.
