LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 10 University of California, San Diego women's water polo team split a pair of games at Canyonview Aquatic Center on March 1. The Tritons fell 11-2 to No. 2 defending NCAA Champs Stanford and bounced back with a 17-6 win over Long Island University.
VS. STANFORD
It was all defense in the first quarter as neither team could find the back of the net. The Tritons held the Cardinals to just three shots while they only recorded five themselves. UC San Diego's offensive struggles continued into the second quarter as the Cardinal outshot them 4-0.
The Tritons would final get on the board midway through the third quarter with a quick goal from
Taylor Onstott to cut the deficit 6-1. The Cardinal closed out the game with a 4-1 run to put it out of reach for the Tritons.
Jessee Ransone had the other goal for the Tritons. Onstott also dished out an assist. Ransone and
Tera Richardson led the defense with three steals.
VS. LIU
Ten different Tritons scored against LIU.
Holly Maine and
Jessee Ransone each had a team high three points from two goals and an assist.
Robyn Carter, Richardson,
Ciara Franke and
Maddie Bockman all recorded two goals.
Reilly Gallagher got the start and finished the game with six saves and a steal.
Tori Rainone came in during the second have and recorded a season high four saves.
The gamed started off close with the Tritons only able to take a 3-2 advantage after almost six minutes of play. Back-to-back goals from Carter and
Grace Pevehouse put the Tritons up 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. UC San Diego outscored Long Island 5-1 in the second quarter to give the Tritons a big cushion for the rest of the game.
The Tritons will shift their attention back to Big West play with a game at Long Beach State on March 7 at noon.
