LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No 7 UC San Diego water polo team wrapped up the Triton Invitational and started the day with a hard fought lose 14-11 game against No 1. USC. They closed out the evening falling to No. 8 ASU 13-8 and finished fourth at the Triton Invite. After the weekend, the Tritons stand at 7-3 overall.
VS USC
The game was wire to wire throughout the first three quarters as neither team could take more than a one goal lead. The lead changed nine times through those first three quarters.
USC entered the fourth frame with a 10-9 lead and immediately scored off the sprint to spark a 4-0 run in the fourth quarter. Goals from
Grace Pevehouse and
Tera Richardson helped cut the deficit but the clock was on the side of the Trojans.
Richardson and Pevehouse each scored a hat trick against the Trojans.
VS ARIZONA STATE
The first quarter started back-in-forth with ASU taking a 4-3 lead after the first quarter. The Sun Devils would outscore 6-3 in the next two quarters.
UC San Diego looked to make a comeback in final frame as Richardson scored to cut the deficit and
Taylor Onstott followed with a penalty goal. But ASU took advantage of a powerplay opportunity to go up 11-8 and shift the momentum towards the Sun Devils.
ASU's Itzahiana Baca provided the Triton's defense a challenge and finished the game with 12 saves.
Onstott and Pevehouse each had a hat trick. Richardson and
Karis Couch also had a goal.
The Tritons will be in action next when they compete at the Redlands Invite on February 15.
