Strong Pitching, Defense Leads to Win Over Point Loma

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego baseball team beat Point Loma under lights at Triton Ballpark. The defense was tested but kept the Tritons in the game the entire way. UC San Diego improve to 5-0 while Point Loma falls to 1-4.

A trio of pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts against the Sea Lions. Luke Mattson earned his second win of the season while Noah Conlon threw five strikeouts and was credited with the save.

Both offenses struggled to put runs on the board. While the Tritons edged out the Sea Lions seven to six in hits, they also finished the game with 11 left on base. Brandon Stewart had the most impactful at bats and hit for a pair of doubles.

The Tritons looked to capitalize early with one out and bases loaded but the Sea Lion defense held steady. The following inning the Tritons found themselves in the same situation, but this time added a run from a sacrifice fly to right field from Shay Whitcomb.

At the top of the fourth, Point Loma tied the score up. Marc Filia hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of fourth and Brandon Stewart's sacrifice fly drove in the run and reclaimed the lead at 2-1. Stewart would get his second RBI of the night when he smacked the ball down the right field line and drove Luke Glascoe home to take a 3-1.

Conlon was lights out to close the ninth inning and threw three strikeouts to end the game.

The Tritons close out the series on February 11 at Point Loma. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
