LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 2 University of California, San Diego baseball team used a huge three-run rally at the bottom of the seventh to take a 3-2 win over Cal Poly Pomona on February 14 at Triton Ballpark.
The Tritons struggled to get their offense going throughout the game. Cal Poly Pomona's Gavin Velasquez gave the Tritons all sorts of problems. He finished the game with 11 strike outs in 6.1 innings of work and only allowed four hits.
Anthony Lucchetti's performance proved to be all the offense the Tritons needed. He finished 2-for-3 at the plate and hit a pair of RBIs that proved to be the tying and game winning runs.
Luke Mattson earned his third win of the season after coming into the game as relief and threw four strike outs.
The Broncos scored the first run at the top of the second when Cowley found home plate. Cal Poly Pomona extended their lead in the seventh to 2-0 with a run from Manskar driven in by Lopez.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Blake Baumgartner worked the pitch count to get the RBI walk and put the Tritons on the board. Anthony Lucchetti hit a beautiful single to left center to bring Everett Lau and Brandon Stewart home and take the first lead of the game at 3-2.
The Tritons made quick work of the Broncos in the eighth inning. Michael Mitchell pitched in the final inning and preserved the score to earn the save.
Game two of the series starts February 15 at Triton Ballpark at 2 p.m.
