LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego baseball team outlasted Cal Poly Pomona 7-6 to remain undefeated on the season and 2-0 in conference play. 7-0 matches their start from a season ago and the 14 hits recorded against the Broncos is a season high.
Everett Lau had his best at bat as a Triton and hit 4-for-5 and scored a pair of runs.
Shay Whitcomb,
Michael Fuhrman and
Brandon Stewart each recorded two hits.
Aaron Kim had a game high three RBIs.
Similar to game one, Cal Poly Pomona struck first. A triple by Brennan McKenzie drove a run in to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Kim sparked the Triton's offense with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. Furhman added to the Triton's run total with an RBI single.
The Broncos cut into the lead with a single from Nick Peifer that brought in a pair of runners.
Anthony Lucchetti stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and earned an RBI walk to give the Tritons the 5-3 lead. UC San Diego looked to do more damage with bases loaded but Steven Ordorica retired the next two batters to end the inning.
Devon Hawks added another RBI walk in the seventh to give the Tritons a 6-3 lead. At the top of the eighth, the Broncos used a three-run rally to tie the game up at 6-6. For the second game in a row, Lucchetti played hero ball and stepped up to the plate, hit a single to center and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
The series concludes February 16 with a double header at Cal Poly Pomona. First game is slated to start at noon.
