Tritons Drop a Pair of Games in Double Header at Cal Poly Pomona

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego baseball team dropped both games in its double header with Cal Poly Pomona. They fell 4-2 in game one and 6-5 in an eleven-inning outing in game two to close out the evening. The Tritons now stand at 7-2 and 2-2 in CCAA.

GAME 1
Both Blake Baumgartner and Michael Furhman went 2-for-4 from the plate. The Tritons finished the game with 10 left on base compared to Cal Poly Pomona's seven.

Bronco's starting pitcher Drew Atherton struck out the Triton's seven times in 4.1 innings of work and held UC San Diego scoreless. Noah Conlon came in relief and was credited with his first loss of the season.

For a second game in a row, the Broncos open up the first inning with a run to go up 1-0. Drew Cowley singled to the right side to drive a runner home. The Broncos would double up the score in the third inning after Ryon Knowles hit for an RBI.

The Tritons tied the game up 2-2 in the fifth inning. Everett Lau singled to right field to bring in a run and Shay Whitcomb took advantage of an infield miscue to score.

UC San Diego loaded the bases in the seventh thanks to walks and looked to take the lead, but the Tritons could not find homeplate. In the bottom of the inning, the Broncos retook the lead 3-2. They stretched the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the eight after a hit from Palacio up the middle brought in a run.

The top of the order was up next for the Tritons, but Cal Poly Pomona retired the next three batters.

GAME 2
The Tritons battled in their longest game of the season and first to go to extra innings.

Drew Cowley singled down the left side for a two run RBI to open the first inning. The Tritons had a big second inning to take a 4-2 lead. Devon Hawks hit a two run RBI to tie the game up. Everett Lau popped the ball up in the infield, but the third baseman could not make the catch and Hawks and Brandon Stewart slipped past him to score.

The Broncos cut into the Triton's lead 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth. The Tritons looked in trouble with bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, but Zach Tresemer and the defense were able to work their way out of the pickle.

Cal Poly Pomona reclaimed the lead in the sixth by scoring a pair of runs. Ryan McNally had a sacrifice bunt in his first at bat of the season to advance runnerss to second and third. With bases loaded, Hawks was walked for the game tying RBI.

The Broncos could not get a run at the bottom of the seventh and sent the game to extra innings. Both team's pitching staffs held strong as the game was extended to eleven innings. The Triton's best shot to score came in the tenth inning when Nick Kitzmann hit a timely double with one out, but the Broncos retired the next two batters.

In the bottom of the eleventh with bases loaded, Logan White Jr. looked to pitch his way out of the inning, but Moya was walked and earned RBI walk-off.
