LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 3 University of California, San Diego baseball team swept their double header against San Francisco State to lead the series 3-0 and improve to 13-3 on the season.
GAME 1: 10-7
Both teams saw success at the plate but also struggled with errors and miscues. Each team recorded 12 hits and three errors. The Gator's pitching staff had a pair of wild pitches and one hit by pitch.
Everett Lau went 4-for-5 from the plate and nearly hit for the cycle with a double, triple and a pair of singles.
Anthony Lucchetti and
Brandon Stewart each went 2-for-4.
Lau's hit down the right line hovered in fair territory and went for a triple in the first. He found home plate to put the Tritons on the board. With bases loaded,
Ryan McNally hit the ball into center field to drive two more runners in and give the Tritons an early 3-0 lead.
The Gators claimed a 5-3 lead in the middle of the second thanks in part to a costly error from the Tritons.
Brandon Stewart got on the bag with a lead-off triple and
Shay Whitcomb hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-4 to close the inning.
Another Triton fielding error led to a run from the Gators to go up 6-4 in the top of the third. Lucchetti gave the Tritons the lead back with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.
Jack Kritsh scored in the top of the seventh to make it a tie ball game in the seventh. The Gators made a pair of costly errors that the Tritons took advantage of in the eighth to win the game.
Ryan McNally was walked and advanced to second and third on an error and wild pitch respectively.
Brandon Stewart's bunt brought McNally in to take the lead. A wild pitch and error from the catch allowed Hawks and Stewart to score and give the Tritons the 10-7 advantage.
GAME 2: 6-0
Game two belonged to
Brandon Weed and Whitcomb as both had phenomenal performances to get the series win. It was also the first seven inning game the Tritons have won this season.
Weed pitched his first complete game of the season in the Tritons' third shutout of the season. He finished with five strikeouts, one walk and one hit. Weed recorded his third win of the season to improve his record to 3-0.
Whitcomb proved to be all the offense the Tritons needed as he went 3-for-4 from the plate with all three of his hits going for home runs. He registered five RBIs in the game with Stewart hitting a double to record the Tritons' only other RBI.
Whitcomb started the second game with a solo leadoff home run in the first inning. He hit his other two homeruns in the fifth and sixth innings.
