Gators Salvage Series Finale, Snap Tritons' Four-Game Win Streak

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The third-ranked UC San Diego baseball team was unable to complete a series sweep, as the Tritons fell by an 8-3 score to visiting San Francisco State on a blustery Sunday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. The setback snapped UC San Diego's four-game win streak and was the Tritons' first home loss in 10 games this season.

UC San Diego's record is 13-4 overall and 8-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) after the Tritons took three of four from San Francisco State in the weekend series.

"I like the weekend but was really disappointed in our effort today," said UC San Diego head coach Eric Newman after the game. "We had a chance to come out and serve notice of who we think we can be, but the effort wasn't what it needed to be mentally. You're not going to have an opportunity to sweep a really good team too often, and I thought we came out flat and didn't respond well."

The Gators (12-6 overall, 6-6 CCAA) picked up a run in the top of the first but the Tritons quickly tied the score in the home half when second baseman Michael Fuhrman singled home first baseman Blake Baumgartner to tie the score at 1-1. San Francisco State re-took the lead in the top of the second with a three-run frame highlighted by a solo homer from catcher Jason Hare to right center.

Leading 5-1 in the fifth, Hare hit his second homer of the game to right center – this time a two-run blast – to give the Gators a 7-1 advantage. UC San Diego answered back in the home half of the fifth. With two on and one out, right fielder Anthony Lucchetti singled up the middle, scoring Shay Whitcomb to make the score 7-2. On the very next pitch, Fuhrman singled through the left side plating Everett Lau to draw the Tritons to within four, 7-3.

However, UC San Diego got no closer. The Tritons had baserunners in each of the last three innings – including loading the bases in the eighth – but could not score. UC San Diego left 11 runners on base Sunday.

"We'll learn from it," Newman added. "That's what I told [the team] after the game: we've got to attack every day; we haven't accomplished anything yet."

Lucchetti was 3-for-5 with an RBI to pace the Tritons and Fuhrman finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. Freshman lefty Izaak Martinez (1-1) struck out five in three innings of work but suffered his first loss of the season.

UC San Diego returns to action on Friday as the Tritons begin a four-game series vs. Cal State San Marcos. Friday and Saturday afternoon's games will take place in San Marcos before the teams head south to Triton Ballpark for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 8.
