Women's Water Polo Bounces Back and Wins a Pair of Games

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 8 UC San Diego Tritons bounced back from a loss yesterday to beat San Diego State 9-8 and San Jose State 8-5 at the Barbara Kalbus Invite to improve to 11-4. They will play for ninth place tomorrow against California at 1 p.m at the Corona del Mar Pool.

VS. SAN DIEGO STATE

For a second game in a row, Bennett Bugelli's play in the goal proved to be the difference maker of the game. She came away with 10 saves and didn't allow a goal in the Aztec's lone penalty shot.

Ciara Franke had three goals including the game winner. Taylor Onstott distributed the ball well and finished with three assists.

The Tritons opened the game with a two-goal lead, but San Diego State responded to tie the game up to close the first quarter. A goal from Grace Pevehouse gave the Tritons a 4-3 lead but a power play goal from San Diego State tied the game up.

The Aztecs found momentum and went on a 4-1 run to go up 8-5 with 7:02 left in the game. UC San Diego rallied and scored four in a row to take its first lead since the first half.  Franke scored both the tying goal and goal to give the Tritons the lead.

With less than a minute left, the Aztecs had one more opportunity to tie the game up but Shelby Kraft's goal was blocked by Bugelli.

VS SAN JOSE ST

Jessee Ransone and Pevehouse registered hat tricks to lead the Tritons. Franke also recorded three points from two goals and an assist.

Bugelli recorded 11 saves in the game and helped the defense hold San Jose State 2-for-9 on power plays.

The Tritons went up 3-1 to open the first quarter. While San Jose would keep things close and tie the game up 4-4 in the third quarter, a penalty goal from Franke put the Tritons up for good.
