Tritons Drop a Close Contest to UC Santa Barbara

IRVINE, Calif. – The University of California, San Diego water polo team dropped a close 9-8 contest to No. 9 UC Santa Barbara in the first game of the Barbara Kalbus Inviational. 
 
The next game will be at 8:00 a.m. at Corona del Mar Pool against San Diego St.
 
Bennett Bugelli put on a show in the goal and recorded 14 saves to help keep the Tritons in the game. The Gauchos only went 1-for-7 on powerplays and 1-for-3 on penalty shots.
 
Taylor Onstott had a hat trick to lead the Tritons. Grace Pevehouse had two goals.
 
The Tritons never trailed by more than two goals against UC Santa Barbara in the first half. The Gauchos scored first but Grace Pevehouse took advantage of a powerplay 20 seconds later to equalize. UC Santa Barbara scored a goal in the final minute of the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead into the half.
 
Down 8-5 in the third quarter, Taylor Onstott went on a solo 3-0 run to tie the game up. At 1:27, UC Santa Barbara scored on a powerplay opportunity to take a 9-8 lead. After an exclusion on the Gauchos, the Triton's used a timeout to try and send the game to overtime.
