COTO de CAZA, Calif. - Playing in a field comprised primarily of NCAA Division I squads, the University of California San Diego men's golf team tied for 10th of 17 Tuesday at the Orange County Collegiate Classic, co-hosted by Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine at Coto de Caza Golf Club.
UC San Diego finished with a 54 hole total of 916 (+52)Â on the par 72, 6,986-yard South Course at Coto de Caza. The Tritons carded rounds of 297, 306, and 313. They were in second place following Monday's opening round and dipped into fifth after the second round was complete.
UC San Diego was the lone NCAA Division II team competing as 15 others were from the Division I ranks and one was out of the NAIA.
Senior Jacob Johnson was the top finisher for the Tritons, tying for 21st in the 92-player field. He concluded with an 8-over 224 after shooting rounds of 70, 74, and 80. His first round 70, which had him tied for second, was the lowest score by any Triton during the tourney. Johnson carded 27 pars and 11 birdies and his 2.83 stroke average on par 3 holes was tied for the lowest of any player.
Senior Hayden Hui (+11) tied for 29th, sophomore Sergi Mata De La Barata Barcons (+18) tied for 60th, sophomore Elliot Bunyaviroch (+23) tied for 66th, and senior Adam Navigato (+26) tied for 76th.
The University of San Francisco and Cal State Fullerton tied for the team championship, each finishing 12 over with an 876. CSUF posted Tuesday's only under par round, totaling a 283 (-5). USF players holed six eagles during the tournament.
The Titans owned the top two spots in the individual standings as Derek Castillo (-8) placed first and Jack Dyer (-1) took second. Â
UC San Diego topped five Division I teams including Sacramento State (12th), Cal Poly (13th), North Alabama (14th), CSUN (15th), and UC Riverside (17th). The Tritons will join Cal Poly, CSUN, and UC Riverside in the Big West Conference next season. Other Big West teams playing at Coto de Caza were Cal State Fullerton (T-1st), UC Santa Barbara (T-4th), and UC Irvine (T-4th).
UC San Diego was coming off a win at last week's Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge in Vista. It was the team's first tourney victory since 2016.
Up next, the Tritons travel to Nevada for the Las Vegas Desert Classic, which runs March 1-3 at Royal Links Golf Club.
