Strong Pitching and Defense Leads to a Pair of Wins on Opening Day

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 3 UC San Diego Tritons opened up the season winning both games in their double header at Triton Ballpark with scores of 5-0 and 9-3.  The Tritons won behind stellar pitching and an impressive defense.

GAME ONE
The pitching staff was on point in the first game. Brandon Weed shined in his first win of the season and struck out seven batters in five innings of work. Noah Conlon pitched the remaining four innings and earned his first save of the year. He finished the game with two strikes and only allowed two hits. Neither of the two pitchers allowed a walk.

Michael Fuhrman had a productive day on the diamond with a team high three runs and 1-for-1 at the plate. He was also walked twice. In his first game as a Triton, Everett Lau made his presence known both offensively and defensively. Lau made several acrobatic plays to get the runner out at first and added an RBI.

Aaron Kim's solo shot to center field in the second inning put the Tritons on the board first. Later in the inning, Nick Kitzmann hit a sacrifice RBI to drive Furhman in and take a 2-0 lead. Kitzmann would drive in Furhman for another run in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 3-0. The Tritons would get insurance runs in the sixth inning from RBI doubles from Lau and Brandon Stewart.

GAME TWO
The defense was able to hold a hot Concordia Offense at bay in the second game. While the Cavaliers had nine hits, they were only able to score three runs and finished the game with 12 left on base. Luke Mattson came onto the mound in relief and pitched a gem with a career high 10 strikeouts.

Shay Whitcomb and Devon Hawkes each had doubles in the game with Hawks registering a game high three RBI's.

The Tritons scored first off a RBI walk from Devon Hawks with bases loaded in the bottom of the second. Concordia would get on the board with a home run from Jake Wikel and take the lead at the top of the fifth with an RBI single to left center from Liam Knowles.

UC San Diego took command of the game at the bottom of the fifth with a seven-run inning. Shay Whitcomb, Anthony Lucchetti, Marc Filia, Jo Bynum and Devon Hawks all hit RBIs during that stretch.
