Bats Come to Life as Tritons Sweep Concordia Portland on Opening Weekend

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California, San Diego baseball team completed its opening weekend sweep over Concordia Portland with a dominate 14-3 win at Triton Ballpark. The offense hit its full stride in the final game of the series.

Both Blake Baumgartner and Anthony Lucchetti went 2-for-3 from the plate. Baumgartner had two RBI's and four runs while Lucchetti had three runs.

Freshman Chris Gilmartin got the call to start on the mound. After allowing a single to left field off his first pitch of the day, Gilmartin brushed it off and retired the next three batters. Gilmartin would finish the game with a pair of strikeouts and earn the win to cap off what was an impressive weekend for Triton pitchers.

"Pitching really came through for us," Lauded Head Coach Eric Newman. "Loved what I saw from all of our pitchers this weekend. They really pounded the strike zone and attacked the hitters."

The Tritons were opportunistic and took advantage of Concordia miscues from the pitching staff. The Cavaliers sent eight players to first base due to being hit by pitches. The staff also combined for five walks.

UC San Diego recorded its first set of steals on the season with Brandon Stewart and Michael Fuhrman stealing second.

After loading the bases thanks to a walk and a hit pitch, Marc Filia drilled a ball past the second basemen into center field and drove two runners in to take a 2-0 lead at the bottom of the third.

The offense broke the game open in the fourth inning and poured in six runs. Anthony Lucchetti, Fuhrman, Stewart and Blake FitzGerald each recorded RBI's with Fuhrman and Stewart each recording a pair.

Concordia would get their first run of the game in the sixth inning to cut into the Triton's lead at 11-1. Blake Baumgartner would respond later in the inning with a solo home run to right center.
The Tritons start their series with Point Loma tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Point Loma.
